These guidelines have been produced to guide Official Measurers approved by AMPS® to conduct official height measurements for all Ponies registered or to be registered with the Society.
All Measurers are volunteers and will not be paid or subsidised by the Society.
Measurers may request that Members requesting a Pony to be measured, reimburse them for reasonable travel costs incurred, i.e. fuel.
This reimbursement amount should be discussed and agreed prior to measuring.
Receiving a Request to Measure:
It is recommended that the following procedures be implemented by all Measurer’s when receiving requests for Ponies to be officially measured:
Ask the following questions: -
Is the Pony branded or microchipped?
If the Pony is branded, are the brands clearly visible (i.e. shoulders clipped)?
If the pony is microchipped, does the Member own or have access to a microchip reader?
Has the Pony recently had their Hooves trimmed?
If the answer is no to any of the above questions, advise the Member that an official height measurement is unable to
be obtained until the brand is visible and a microchip reader available. If you, as the Measurer have a microchip
reader you may be willing to use your own. .
Also, with regards to the Hooves, unless they have been recently trimmed, you will not get an accurate measurement and you can only measure the Pony as presented to you on the day, as you are unable to make any allowance for
untrimmed hooves. Organise a suitable time and place to conduct measuring.
Measuring Ponies:
On the day of measuring, Measurer’s are reminded of the following: -
It is recommended that you keep a record of the name of the Ponies you measure, the owner’s name, the date and time you measure the Ponies, as well as the location.
If measuring for an upgrade, or a 4 or 6-year-old measurement, check the original Registration Certificate and confirm the Pony presented for measuring is identified by either the brand or microchip number which appears on the Registration Certificate.
If the Pony is already AMPS® Registered, record the official height measurement on the rear of the Registration Certificate or if the Pony is not yet registered, complete an AMPS® Height Measurement Certificate for Registration. In both instances, when recording the measurement, remember to sign and date in the appropriate places.
If completing a Height Measurement Certificate, also ensure you complete the identification details, i.e. description of brands or microchip number. If the Member has a sticker with the microchip number, it is a good practice to stick this on the paperwork to enable the recording of the correct number.
If the Pony is being measured for a 2 year old Adult upgrade, remind the Member that they need to send the original Registration Certificate to the Office, together with the Application to Foal Record/ Register/ Upgrade Form, with the appropriate fee. Reminder: Ponies must be Adult Registered at 2 years old to Show or breed with.
Measuring Ponies:
If the Pony is being measured for a 4 or 6 year old
Adult upgrade, remind the Member that they need to send the
original Registration Certificate to the Office, so that the Height can be endorsed on the front of the Registration
Certificate and the database updated.
Reminder that neither the owner of the Pony, nor the Official Measurer are authorised to write on the front of the
Registration Certificate.
If an AMPS® Registered Miniature Pony measures over 87cm at either their 2, 4 or 6 year height measurement, they must be upgraded to the Appendix Registry. If this occurs, the owner should be advised to send the original Registration Certificate to the Office, together with an Application to Foal Record/ Register/ Upgrade Form and the appropriate fee.
When measuring a Pony who is applying for a new Registration with AMPS®, the Pony must measure 87cm or under to qualify for AMPS® Registration.
Advise the owner that the official measurement you have performed is only valid for 90 days.
Important notes regarding Measuring:
Adult Registered Ponies, who at their 4-year height measurement were 85.5cms or more and Appendix Ponies, who at their 4-year height measurement were 89.5cms or more, the ponies must be re-measured again at age 6 years and before reaching age 7 years.
At all times, irrespective of age, the height of the Australian Miniature Pony must not exceed 87cms and an Appendix Pony must not exceed 91.5cms.
In the case of a Measurer or Member living in a non-serviced area, with no access to having their Ponies measured, application is required to be made in writing to the National Secretary for a vet to measure or the owner to measure their own pony with another financial member present to witness the measurement.
Where To Measure Ponies:
Measurement is taken at the highest point of the wither.
For an accurate measurement, Measurers should make sure the ground is level.
The pony must stand naturally on all four hooves, standing squarely on the ground, not stretched.
After measuring on one side of the Pony, it is a good idea to then measure on the other side, this ensures an accurate measurement.
